MixdGreens (your fellow Serial Comma-nist) here. Long-time meditation practitioner. As every Buddhist knows, life is all about change; so is meditation. What works this week, won't work next week. Sometimes it is as easy as clearing my mind with simple and deliberate breathing. Other times, a lesson given in a reading gives me focus. No matter. I never leave a session the same as when I went into it. Anger lessens. Focus improves. Calmness replaces agitation. Well worth whatever time you can put toward it, even if you have to get up extra early to take advantage of the peace at the beginning of the day.

Well done Kathleen - I've just started meditating but haven't got it down to a daily event which I think is necessary to see progress. Three minutes would be more manageable than 20. Does evening or morning work best for you?

Mandy, seems like I'm more likely to do this if I do it in the morning. But the only time that doesn't work so well is at night when I'm sleepy--because I nod off (here at my desk)!

    Why Call It ADD?

    • The name is so wrong. ADD stands for attention deficit disorder, and ADHD adds an H for hyperactivity. I use the former, since I don't have the H thing.

      But a deficit of attention? I think most of us with ADD would agree we have more like a surplus of attention. And a disorder? That leaves out our strengths.

      Still, I use ADD because it's a widely understood term for a useful concept. When you comment on this site, feel free to use whatever term you're comfortable with.


    • If you have ADD, you’ve probably heard plenty of criticism over the years—including from yourself. Enough of that! Here are my requests to those who comment:

      Don't criticize others, give advice, or speculate on others’ motives.

      Do share your own experience, strength, and hope!
